He's instantly taken back to childhood as soon as his fork touches his lips. In his mind's eye, he's seated at his mother's table, tucking into this hearty meal packed with vibrant flavours and, of course, affection.
Oatmeal makes me think of Ratatouille. My father used to work a very early shift when I was a kid. He used to wake me up early in the morning and greet me at the table with a steaming dish of porridge. I had no idea what time it was or cared about it; all I knew was that it was dark outside and that I would be surrounded by a dish of comfort. To this day, I know I can bank on the comfort of this guilt-free cuisine that nevertheless seems extravagant whether I'm worried or simply in the mood for a hug from my plate.
